Grading a Quiz

Some quiz questions can be set up to be graded automatically by D2L, including multiple-choice, true/false, multi-select, and matching. More qualitative questions, like written response, must be graded manually

There are two options for grading quizzes: 

  • By Student Attempt: To grade an entire quiz for one student at a time.
  • By Question: To grade one question for one student at a time.
Grading by Student Attempt
  1. Go Assessments then Quizzes.
  2. Select the dropdown arrow [1] next to the quiz.
  3. Select Grade [2].
  1. The Grade Quiz page will open to the Users tab. Under the name of the student, select the attempt link.
  1. Scroll down to the quiz questions and enter feedback:
    • Enter a value in the Score field [1] for questions that must be graded manually or  to change the score that D2L has automatically assigned.
    • Select the Expand question feedback [2] link and enter text in the Feedback text-box to provide qualitative feedback.
  1. Enter text in the Attempt Feedback text-box to give the student feedback on the entire quiz attempt.
  1. Select Save and Close.
Grading by Question
  1. Go Assessments then Quizzes.
  2. Select the dropdown arrow [1] next to the quiz.
  3. Select Grade [2].
  1. The Grade Quiz page will open to the Users tab. Select the Questions tab to view a list of all questions on the quiz. By default Grade Individual Responses and View Graded Responses will be checked.
  1. Select the question title link. The first response will be displayed.
  2. Enter a value in the Score [1] field (or adjust the value automatically entered by D2L)
  3. Select Expand question feedback [2] to open the Feedback field, and enter any qualitative feedback.
  4. Select Save and Continue to go to the next student.

Manually publishing Quiz Scores to the Gradebook

If quizzes are not fully auto-graded, scores will need to be manually published to the gradebook.

  1. Go to the Quizzes area of the course.
  2. Select the dropdown arrow [1] next to the quiz.
  3. Select Grade [2].
  1. Select the Select all rows checkbox [1] to select all the quiz attempts.
  2. Select Publish Feedback [2].
  1. In the pop-up window, select Yes to publish the quiz scores to the gradebook.
