How to Archive a D2L Course

How to Export the Course Package

  1. Go to the D2L course you wish to archive and click on Edit Course.
  2. Select Import/Export/Copy Components.



  3. Select Export as Brightspace Package. This package will include what you need to import the course into a different D2L site, allowing you to reuse its structure and materials. You can also unzip the package later to back up or retrieve course files on your computer.
    * Choose the Export as Common Cartridge option if you need to create a package that is compatible with other learning management systems/ LMSs.
  4. Click Start.

    IMPORTANT: Student data—such as assignment submissions, discussion posts, and grades—is not included in these exported packages. To back up the information separately, please refer to the following resources:

  5. Check Select All Components to gather all necessary resources. (Your list may differ from the screenshot below depending on which tools you have used in your course.)
  6. Click Continue.



  7. On the Confirm Components to Export page, scroll to the bottom and make sure to check Include course files in the export package.
  8. Click Export.



  9. Click Done, then wait for the notification to appear in the Update Alerts section. Please note this may take several minutes.
  10. Click on the Bell icon when the orange dot appears.




  11. Click on the Export finished link.



  12. Save the file by clicking on the Click here to download the export Zip package link.



Working with the Exported Package (Archived ZIP File)

Option 1: Import into Another D2L Course Site
Re-use course materials by importing the archived package into a different D2L Brightspace course shell.

Option 2: Extract Course Content Locally
Unzip the archived ZIP file to access and retrieve course content for reference or secure offline storage.
